More About Collaborative Leadership: Fundamental Concepts Module

This learning module helps people get acquainted with collaborative leadership. It sets the stage for the Collaborative Leadership Learning Modules: A Comprehensive Series but can also stand alone as an effective overview to collaborative leadership for staff and students in community or public health, as well as for nonprofit boards or community groups.

The module includes many hands-on activities, brief leadership scenarios on video, and opportunities to encourage dialogue and interaction.

A number of concepts are fundamental to the understanding of collaborative leadership. Since participants vary widely in their familiarity with these concepts, no single approach can be effective with all audiences.

The module offers a spectrum of fifteen“warm up” learning activities, from which facilitators can choose those most appropriate to their particular audience. The activities cover the following points:

• When to use and when not to use collaboration
• What is leadership? Who is a leader?
• Leadership styles
• Why collaborate?
• What is the context for collaboration?
• What are the keys to successful collaboration?
• What is collaborative leadership?
• What makes collaborative leadership different?
• The six practices of collaborative leadership
• Collaborative leadership strategies
• Challenges
• Challenges to and opportunities for collaborative leadership
• Building collaborative leadership skills.

The module is best presented over a day and a half, but can be done in one day or divided into several short sessions. The content is identical to the Fundamentals Concepts module included in the Comprehensive Series, and is offered separately for your convenience.
